What are examples of Leverage Points?
Local/regional food systems emerged as a vehicle for mitigating some of the externalities associated with the industrial food system. Food hubs then surfaced as a way to facilitate connection between local/regional producers and diverse markets. But data showed that the average food hub was a newer enterprise with relatively inexperienced management. Creating the nation’s first food hub management certificate program at the University of Vermont represented a leverage point in meeting broader food systems goals.
The UN declared 2012 the International Year of Cooperatives. Young people were a key audience for the message that, as then-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “Cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility.” It was clear that young people resonated with these values, but how could these stakeholders be reached? Youth leaders with a track record in the cooperative economy were well positioned to effectively engage their peers and broaden awareness of the connection between young people's values and the Cooperative Principles. Empowering these track-record emerging leaders, while coaching them on project management accountability, represented a leverage point for expanding youth awareness of the cooperative business model.
